Desk Report:
After more than a year of reviewing USA Cricket’s (USAC) activities and in-depth discussions with various stakeholders, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to suspend USA Cricket’s membership.
The decision, taken yesterday at the ICC virtual board meeting, was based on the failure to establish an effective governance structure, the lack of progress in achieving recognition as the national governing body of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and the damage to the image of cricket in the United States and around the world. The ICC sees the decision to suspend USA Cricket’s membership as an inevitable but necessary step. The world cricket governing body believes that it was necessary to protect the long-term interests of cricket. However, keeping in mind that the cricketers are not affected, the USA national team will be able to play in ICC tournaments and also prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This means that the decision to suspend membership will not have any impact on their participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The USA cricket team will also be able to participate in the Los Angeles Olympics.
The new decision by the ICC will be handled by the ICC or their Designated representatives, so that players receive regular support and their efforts to qualify for the Olympics are not hindered.
At its annual general meeting in July, the ICC gave USA Cricket three months to hold fair elections and implement administrative reforms. At that time, the board was warned that the ICC could take necessary action based on the progress of the reforms. However, if the expected changes did not occur even after the deadline, USA Cricket was punished with a suspension of its membership.
